What is BEMER
A certified medical device that works on the smallest blood vessels. Here is what that means, and what it does not mean.
The short version
BEMER applies a patented pulsed electromagnetic signal of low intensity. Its stated target is vasomotion: the rhythmic squeeze and release of the smooth muscle in your arterioles, the vessels just before the capillaries.
That matters because vasomotion is what distributes blood in the smallest vessels. You can have a perfectly good pulse and normal blood pressure and still deliver less oxygen to the tissue than you should. That is the lever BEMER claims to pull.
How it differs from magnetic therapy
They look alike from the outside and get confused constantly. Conventional magnetic therapy usually uses high field intensity and a simple signal, aimed mostly at bone and soft tissue. With BEMER the point is not that there is a magnetic field. It is which signal is transmitted and what it is aimed at.
It is not a TENS unit either, which works on the nerve; nor therapeutic ultrasound, which works by heating tissue locally; nor compression, which works mechanically and on the return side.
How it is used
Eight minutes, twice a day, at home. You lie on the mat or place the applicator on the area. There is nothing to feel during a session, and that surprises people: no heat, no tingle, no massage.
What it does not do
It does not cure anything, it does not diagnose anything and it does not replace treatment prescribed by your doctor. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling badly. The development of the signal is credited to the work of Dr Reiner Klopp at the Institute for Microcirculation in Berlin, from the late nineteen-nineties onwards.
